As I did in the close focus comparison table above, I'll add a handful of zoom lens options that either cover the focal length or have very wide focal lengths and an f/2.8 aperture. The 14mm focal length can, especially with the interesting perspective it provides, capture artistic types of imagery. While this lens' 115.7° angle of view is not going to be confused with a fisheye lens' angle of view, it is one of the widest rectilinear (vs. fisheye) focal length options available. While seeing the actual depth of field at the selected aperture can be advantageous, a sure downside is the darkened viewfinder provided at narrow aperture settings. it is a less-used full frame focal length. More than once I adjusted three clicks on the camera and three clicks with the ring. of compression data loss on top of the always-destructive process of correcting the distortion. At 2 metres, the fine detail isn’t showing clearly, even at 10x magnification on the rear view. though the distortion correction percentage can be adjusted in ACR (Adobe Camera Raw). A quick example from outside my house shows the appreciable difference it makes with this lens in going from f/2.8 to f/8. Bringing you this site is my full-time job (typically 60-80 hours per week). Pin-point stars in the night sky are the subject that brings this aberration out most easily for me and, with this lens' focal length and aperture being great for night sky photography, I was anxious to focus it on the stars. Free shipping. Just don't get too close. Depth of field preview is always enabled when using this lens. However, it appears that the effective focus point also varies slightly with aperture. The rate at which subject matter is moving across imaging sensor pixels determines the shutter speed required to stop motion. However I found it perfectly easy to use out and about, by making use of good depth of field at f/8 and an ability to roughly estimate distances. As long as the depth of field is adequate, f/2.8 stops the blur without ultra-high ISO settings being resorted to. Taking several shots hand-held, it was easily able to stitch them into much wider views, such as this one of St. Mary de Castro. If you’ve got the patience, you might be able to get closer by tweaking these settings. The hood is constructed of rigid plastic with only slight flex that aids in absorbing impact. I like to compose (for the brighter viewfinder) and focus (better precision with a shallower DOF) with the aperture set to f/2.8, then adjust the aperture as desired prior to photographing. The 14mm angle of view is great for this. I am grateful for your support! I mention rectilinear (‘straight lines’) since I also have the Canon 8-15 zoom fisheye lens [review] which most definitely does not keep straight lines straight (unless they pass through the centre of the field). The Rokinon 14mm Ultra Wide-Angle f/2.8 IF ED UMC Lens is a great piece of glass. The wider the focal length, the easier to utilize I find fully manual lenses to be. Prefer your corners more evenly bright? Lenses. The lens offers an impressive 114-degree field of view on full frame cameras and 92.5-degree on APS-C cameras. Although it can be used on both ‘full frame’ and APS-C DSLRs, Samyang’s 14mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC lens is best suited to ‘full frame’ DSLRs, where it covers a maximum angle of view equal to 115.7 degrees and can focus down to 0.28 meters (28 cm). This is a manual focus, manual aperture, manual exposure lens that does not report any information (not even the aperture used) to the camera. Was this so, could it be fixed, and how difficult was this ‘everything manual’ lens going to be to use? However, few of them have an f/2.8 aperture available. You get a lot of depth of field at f/8 on a 14mm lens – learn to use it. In this example, the f/2.8 aperture is looking excellent in this area of the frame, appearing nearly as sharp as f/4 where this lens really delivers impressively. My Samyang 14 experience has been much better using manual exposures, though +/- exposure compensation can be successfully used if a narrow range of apertures are being used. Though this lens may slow you down in the field, it may also force you to take more care in the set up of your images. More so, wide angles are about making foreground subjects large in relation to background subjects and about including a lot of that background in the frame. Subjects you will want to have a 14mm angle of view on hand for include landscapes (especially), nightscapes, cityscapes, architecture (both exterior and interior), real estate, etc. In many respects, difficulties I’ve heard about using a lens like this reflect lack of experience and skills – the cost of digital images (i.e. are a good use of a 14mm lens and a good reason to have such a lens in your kit. It’s worth noting that at 14mm it only takes a slight pointing upwards to get very noticeable convergence of verticals (see my Why I use shift lenses article for more). It so happens that my preferred way of using such wide angles lenses often relies on setting the lens to infinity, rather than the rather vague ‘hyperfocal’ technique (I’ll show an example in a bit). Excellent – I’m hoping to test a few of the newer Samyang lenses this year. Two aspects I’m aware that not everyone will agree with ;-), The aperture blades are not round, so do give a slight shape to OOF highlights at anything other than f/2.8. At f/8 on my setup, infinity focus was just slightly in (shorter) from where marked. This lens is very easy to perfectly focus at minimum focus distance and also at infinity, though having subjects stay in ideal focus over a range of ring rotation can give pause to perfectionists focusing at very long distances Aided by that build feature, this lens has a solid weight for its size and feels very nice in hand.
